Harlequin bunded portable diesel tank

[>image1]Harlequin Plastics, leaders in fuel oil tank for domestic heating, diesel dispensing, adblue storage and rainwater harvesting and water storage tanks have launched the first plastic inner and outer bunded portable diesel dispesing tank that is U.N. approved and ADR compliant for the safe transportation of diesel fuel on the public road.

This new diesel tank is the only all plastic tank that is both UN approved and fully compliant with the Control of Pollution Regulations (See Environment Agency Pollution Prevention Guidelines PPG2) that can be used as a static diesel dispenser over 200 litre.
The new Transfuel SBD430 is 430 litres and comes as a complete package with 12v or 24v Piusi Bi-Pass 3000 pump, 4m hose of diesel delivery hose and an automatic cut-off nozzle, just like a forecourt nozzle which helps reduce the chance of spillage and keeps your fuel clean and equipment working.

Water in your oil tank?

Water in domestic heating oil tanks can cause all manner of problems to boilers and oil-fired cookers such as Agas and Rayburns. Water can enter the tank through different ways, common reasons include damaged vents and caps allowing rain water in, condensation forming due to daily temperature changes causes a small amount of water droplets to form on the inside of the tank and accumulate over time. Any water that enters the tank will drop to the bottom of the tank and sit under the oil. When this accumulation of water builds up to a level that reaches the outlet of the tank – the problem starts.

Over the passed 10 years we've work closely with leading oil distribution companies, with the filtering equipment used at most fuel distribution depots its very unlikely that water could be delivered to your tank with the fuel. A bad batch of fuel is very rare and most fuel problems occur because of water and materials (leafs, insects etc…) that get in the tank locally.

Extremely cold winter weather can cause water in the tank to freeze and expand to block the outlet and oil supply pipe, often confused with the heating oil freezing which is not the case as kerosene freezing point is –30 degrees C. which is very rare in the UK.

Detecting water in the oil
Water finding paste is available to detect the problem, it’s very easy to use, just smear the paste on a bamboo cane or stick long enough to reach the bottom of the tank, the paste will change colour if it comes in to contact with water.

Removing water from the oil
There are various options once the water has been detected. Steel tanks often have sludge valves at the back of the tank, designed for the removal of the water and any sludge and heavy material in the tank. With plastic tanks removing the water is a little trickier, having no sludge valve means water has to be removed by pumping it out from the bottom of the tank.

There are additives and fuel conditioners which help to emulsify the water and oil, which then get burn off through the boiler.

If you have an Aga or other vaporiser appliance, emulsifying water and oil may not be the best solution as it can sot up the wick. It’s far better to have the water removed from the tank.

Preventative Maintenance

To prevent the build up of water in the oil tank becoming a problem, water absorbent products are available, we offer tank water soakers which only absorb water, these are excellent insurance against future problems and should be check periodically.

At Southern Tank Services Ltd, we have the specialist equipment and skilled OFTEC qualified engineers to remove water from your oil tank and clean your tank. We work to best industry practice, Environment Agency guidelines and have a waste carriers licence and full insurance for oil fired work. If you require any assistance please call us on 01722 714514

Oil tank installation, what to look for.

Oil tank replacement is one of those things that you don’t want to spend money on at any time of the year. But with summer here bringing dryer weather to the gardens of the UK, now is the best time to have your new oil tank installed and end of life older tanks replaced.

If you currently store oil for heating, hot water or cooking now’s the time to take a look at the condition of your existing oil tank. With dryer weather it’s easier to see if there are any damp oil stains on the tank or if there is any staining on the piers or supports of the tank.

Things to look for when assessing the condition of your oil storage tank:
Oil staining or ‘mooning’ of oil from the base of the oil tank up the sides or on the supports.
Heavy rust blisters, usually found where the oil tanks is resting on the supports but also under the tank.
Leaky pipework or oil filters, taps and valves including site tubes.
Leafs, plant growth and organic matter on top of the tank. These hold water and are breeding grounds for insects that like to crawl into the tank vent then fall in the tank. Keep the tank top and sides clear and check the top of the tank for rust and holes.
Steel tanks mounted on steel frames have a tendency to rust along the edges of the steel frame, so check there.
If you have a plastic oil tank, check for signs of cracks, these tend to appear at the top and at the widest point, usually on the sunniest side but check the whole tank and the outlet point.

If you have any concerns about the condition of your oil tank, feel free to call Southern Tank Service Ltd for advice. Tel 01722 714514

Oil tank cleaning equipment arrives at Southern Tank Services

At Southern Tank Services Ltd we have always offered a complete after sales service to complement our installations and direct sales. We have now taken delivery of custom made oil tank cleaning equipment which will allow us to carry out tank cleaning at a realistic cost to keep your heating oil and diesel fuel oil in tip top condition.

As the fuel oil storage tank gets older, sedement and sludge can build up caused by condensation, bacterial growth and organic matter. Each time your tank is refilled this build up of sludge can be mixed up with the new clean fuel oil and block filters, or worse, get in to the boiler or engine fuel systems on generators and vehicles causing expensive down time or break downs.

Regular (every 2 years for diesel and gas oil, 5 years for heating oil and kerosene) tank cleaning will prevent most problems associated with storage of fuel oil.

Our tank cleaning service procedure typically is to pump out the good oil to our clean storage tank, then the tank internal surfaces are cleaned using a tank vacuum and jetting equipment as nessessary. The good oil is then tranferred back to the now clean tank through a fuel polishing filter system to ensure both tank and fuel is clean and ready for reliable service.

If you think you could benefit from our tank cleaning and fuel polishing service please call or email now for more information. 01985 248555 or mail@tankservices.co.uk

Police warn 'Lock your oil tank'

On the 28th January 2011, the BBC News Webite reported 'Police warn on heating oil thefts'

Rural residents are being warned by police to be careful after a rise of oil thefts from domestic oil tanks in home owners gardens. The price of the fuel has risen by 70% in less than a year and criminals are targeting isolated homes.

Police have advised homeowners to fit padlocks or locking caps on their oil tanks and consider installing alarms to improve security

There are more than 1,500,000 homes across the UK, mostly in rural areas that are dependent on domestic heating oil.

The increase in the price of the oil and the isolated nature of these homes has made them an easy target for thieves.

The BBC's Louise Hubbal said: "Police say that the oil is being sold on and can even be used in diesel cars."

At Southern Tank services Ltd, we have a range of security devices that are simple to install and may encourage the thieves to move on to the next, less secure, oil tank. See our range of oil storage tank security products including oil tank locks and alarms

ADR tank labeling. A change in regulations.

From the beginning of this year, ADR regulations require new labeling of transportable tanks and IBC's. Rest assured that every oil tank supplied by Southern Tank Services Ltd will comply with the new regulations, but what about existing oil tanks and IBC's already in use? ADR makes it clear that existing diesel tanks need to show the labels also."The ADR regulations governing the carriage of Diesel require the following three additional labels to be provided on IBCs from 1st January 2011.These labels will appear on all new IBCs but existing units will also require them.
Police warn of red diesel theft from fuel tanks in scotland

If you have any concerns about your fuel storage tank security, call us now to discuss your requirements to ensure your tank and diesel stored within are not vulnerable.

BBC website reports...

"Police have warned drivers they could have their vehicles seized if they are found to be using stolen red diesel."

"It follows three raids on yards in and around the Borders in recent weeks."

"About 3,000 litres of regular diesel were taken in the first incident, in Hawick, between 5 and 9 November."

"Some 200 litres of red diesel were taken from a tank in Greenlaw on the same dates while 2,000 litres were stolen from a yard near the A701 at Penicuik in Midlothian on 10 November."

"Lothian and Borders Police said that where significant volumes of fuel were stolen it would require the use of a pump and a large vehicle."

Any sightings of vehicles acting "suspiciously at farms and industrial premises should be reported to the police, who said they were stepping up their own patrols."

'Dip sampling'

"They have also warned that anyone offered red diesel for use in a normal road vehicle should be aware that it is breaking the law to use it."

"The vehicle can be seized and a significant financial penalty imposed."

"Police also conduct "dip sampling" of vehicle fuel tanks on behalf of HM Revenue and Customs right across the region."

"Red diesel is normally sold to farmers, construction companies and factories to run machinery not used on public roads."

"The fuel - which is coloured red to prevent its use by private motorists - is taxed at a lower level compared to the normal diesel levy."

Oil Tank Installation

Published on the Environment Agency web site.

“Environment Agency bosses in the South are urging businesses and individuals to seek advice about potential environmental problems and safety impacts that may come during the thaw.”

“It’s important that we offer guidance where necessary and reassurance when needed,” explained Toby Willison the Environment Agency’s regional director for the south. “We work closely with all our business partners to ensure the environment is protected whatever the weather. However, individuals also need to be clear on the things they can do to protect themselves and the environment, even if it’s simple advice such as regularly checking pipes for damage.”

“Home owners across the south east who use heating oil are being urged to check their tanks and pipes to avoid pollution. Many people in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, particularly in rural areas, burn heating oil to warm their homes and business premises.”

“Every winter there are several incidents of leaks from heating oil tanks in the region, resulting in oil seeping into the ground. This can have a devastating effect on the local environment, especially if the oil travels through the rock and into the water stored under the ground.”

“Problems with oil tanks can also have a devastating effect on homeowners as clean up costs can run in the tens of thousands of pounds, with these costs not always covered by home insurance policies. The clean-up operation can also involve the excavation of large areas of gardens and driveways to clean out leaked oil.”

As part of its advisory role, the Environment Agency has a simple message for businesses and consumers. If you need advice and support – or if you have any concerns regarding pollution or flooding - call on the following numbers:
• For businesses: National Customer Contact Centre: 24hr: 08708 506 506
• For consumers: Environment Agency: 24hr incident hotline: 0800 80 70 60
• For all: Floodline: 24hr: 0845 988 1188

Southern Tank Services Ltd. has OFTEC qualified engineers employed to check the condition of oil tanks and oil tank pipes, gauges and ancillary equipment, call us on 01985 248555 if you have any doubts about the condition of your oil tank installation and would like one of our engineers to assess its condition.

Southern Tank Services visit Harlequin Plastics oil tank factory.

Southern Tank Services Ltd. two directors, Ross Cowan and Chris Ford, were invited to visit leading oil tank manufacturer, Clarehill Plastics Ltd. manufacturer of the Harlequin Oil Tank brand, at their factory and head office in Moira, Northern Ireland.

Since 1981, Clarehill has pioneered the development of rotationally moulded oil tanks and other environmental containers. Today, Clarehill is firmly established as the country's truly independent manufacturer of rotationally moulded fuel storage products, under the Harlequin brand.
Operating from purpose built production and distribution facilities in the heart of Northern Ireland, Clarehill services a diverse and demanding customer base throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. The Harlequin range consists of over 200 different models, including tanks for BioDiesel, Diesel, Heating Oil, Non Potable Water, Potable Water, Waste Oils and Lubricants and a range of bunker storage solutions for Coal, Grit and Road Salt.

As a business, Clarehill differentiates itself through its products and services that exceed the highest expectations of its customers. Clarehill was the first plastic tank manufacturer in the United Kingdom to achieve BS5750 Quality Management accreditation. And today, all products are manufactured in a UKAS accredited ISO9001:2000, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 approved production environment being engineered to exceed the toughest environmental, statutory and technical requirements.

As a leading member of OFTEC - The Oil Firing Technical Association and the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers, Clarehill takes its obligations to the industries and communities in which it trades seriously. As well as working to ensure compliance with the manufacturing requirements of OFTEC's OFS T100 Standard - the only independently recognised standard for rotationally moulded single skin and bunded plastic oil tanks in the EU - Clarehill also works to ensure compliance with local product standards in key overseas markets.

Clarehill has a Sales, Marketing and Business Development Team covering Western Europe, complemented by a team of Area Sales Managers across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, and strategic distributors in key overseas markets. Recent investments in people, plant, processes and products ensure that Clarehill is particularly well positioned to benefit from an ever changing dynamic and demanding sectors in which the business operates.

"During the day long visit we were able to see every stage of the manufacturing process from the design office through to the polymer being ground and mixed, the moulds and the rotational moulding ovens and machines used to make the oil tanks to the finished tanks and the quality control systems used during the complete manufacturing process. This opportunity has given us an even better understanding of how an oil tank is made, seeing the fitting and outlet being moulded in the tank and the 'polishing' finish was very interesting."

"Not only did we get to see the manufacturing process, we were able to learn about the distribution side of the business too, ensuring each customer receives the correct tank at the correct time."

"We would just like to thank everyone at Harlequin's factory for opening their doors to us and the kind hospitality shown during our entire trip."

Winter is on it's way, it's now a good time to check the condition of your oil tank when you check your oil level. If you have a steel oil tank, have a good look on the under side, at the supporting piers and check the pipework for damage and leaks. It's also a good idea to remove any organic material that has fallen from surrounding trees and bushes as this can attract damp and insects which can fall in through the vent and block the filters and supply pipes.

If you have any concerns, feel free to call us and talk to one of our qualified OFTEC enginneers.
