Underground tank installations – Commercial
Underground Fuel Tank Installations
Tank Services are specialists to consult when installing underground fuel tank systems. We are often subcontracted as part of bigger projects and have helped specifiers and architects with consulting requirements.
Why an underground tank installation?
Storing fuel underground has major security and space-saving advantages compared to above-ground tanks. Underground oil tanks are out of sight, with zero chance of a vehicle collision in a busy traffic environment. Therefore, they are less likely to cause a pollution incident or oil spill due to physical damage. The pipework will also be under negative pressure, so there is less likelihood of a major loss of oil due to undetected leaks.
Our Underground Tank Installation Process
Our industry experience allows us to provide full in-house project management and risk assessment. We cover the ground conditions and preparation, civil excavation, tank, pipework, pumps and monitoring equipment from start to finish. Some projects may be subject to planning permission, but we can help with drawing and specification for this as required. You will need to check with your local planning authority for more information.
What can be stored in an underground tank installation?
Below-ground tank installations suit a wide range of fuel storage and flammable liquid applications, including:
- Vehicle refuelling – Diesel and Petrol dispensing with twin compartment tanks available.
- Generator diesel supply for backup power (Uninterrupted Power Supply).
- Oil-fired boilers and burners – both commercial and domestic heating oil.
- AdBlue storage and dispensing for diesel vehicles.
- Specialist chemicals and manufacturing processes.
Tank Services supply and install underground oil storage tanks (USTs) designed and manufactured to BS EN12285 Pt 1. Using steel with a highly corrosion-resistant Endoprene coating and an integrally bunded build, our tank manufacturer maintains the highest construction standards.
Leak detection and interstitial monitoring
Our underground double-skin tanks use a dry-air leak detection system. With low pressure, compressed air monitoring between the tank skins for complete environmental protection against oil leaks. As part of the underground tank installation process, we can supply and install all the required infrastructure, too:
- Pipework (with an option for leak detection) between the tank and pump, boiler or generator. Belowground ‘pipe-in-pipe’, secondary contained pipe.
- Above-ground stainless steel pipework for internal runs.
- Install vent pipes and fill cabinets as required.
- Leak detection systems with alarm outputs for BMS panels.
- Level gauges and level alarms to monitor your fuel stock locally and via a cloud-based system to access your tank levels remotely.
Every project is unique.
Each client’s requirements are carefully considered to ensure every installation is fulfilled on time and to the highest standard. We are 100% compliant with oil storage regulations, environment agency protection levels, British Standards and building regulations. Working to industry best practice, we use the APEA ‘Blue Book’ as our installation bible, and our engineers are OFTEC registered technicians under the competent person scheme. Health and safety standards are maintained and monitored via CHAS accreditation. This ensures our fully trained and qualified engineers and other on-site parties are kept safe and risks are controlled.
