Water booster Powertanks

Booster Pump and Tank System

Boosting mains water pressure could not be simpler with our range of Powertanks.  Combining a break tank with an automatic water pump complete with a fill valve and overflow outlet into one easy-to-install package takes all the hassle out of the plumbing.

Our range of Powertanks will improve water flow rates and higher pressure where supplied mains water is insufficient to keep up with demand.  This can happen in buildings with multiple floor levels and dwells where a single water main is shared between several apartments and flats.

Powertanks include efficient and quiet running water pumps complete with an automatic, on-demand pump controller to ensure the pump only runs when there is a demand. With fully automatic start-stop and run-dry protection, you can fit and forget and let the Powertank boost your water pressure with complete peace of mind.

Why do I need a break tank to boost water pressure?

If your water flow is low and the pressure is not enough to keep up with the demand, you need more water before you can supply it at a faster rate and higher pressure. The break tank allows the pump to supply water freely without pulling from a limited supply.  This gives your taps and outlets the water required at a higher pressure and flow. Perfect for powerful showers and watering the garden.

How do I choose the correct size of tank?

You need to consider the water usage and the property's size. If you have low water pressure or flow, you must store enough water to meet your demand. Use the following tank sizes as a guide unless you have higher-than-usual demand.

  • 1 -2 Bedroom House or Flat: 125L or 200L
  • 3-4 Bedrooms: 200L to 500L
  • Larger tanks will be required for multiple bathrooms, guest houses and hotels with high peak demands.
  • Commercial buildings must consider peak demand and incoming supply to ensure the tank has enough capacity to supply the required water volume.

Will a booster pump increase hot water pressure as well?

Boosting cold water pressure and flow will only work for the hot water if you have a pressurised, unvented hot water system or a combi boiler. Boosting cold water will not help hot water pressure if you have an older system using a cold water header tank, as this water will not be at the same pressure as the cold water.  If you have an unvented pressurised hot water tank or combi boiler that uses mains pressure water, then the Powertank will boost both cold and hot water equally.  We do not recommend boosting the cold water flow if you have a header tank feeding the hot water, as this will unbalance the hot and cold supply.

What is the difference between fixed-speed and variable-speed booster pumps?

Fixed-speed water pumps for boosting water pressure give 100% power every time the pump switches on. In the 'on-demand' state, the automatic pump control switches the pump on and off, but it is always at full power.

Variable speed pumps use an intelligent pump controller to maintain constant pressure on all taps and appliances across the property. This boosted water pressure is maintained by varying the pump power and speed to suit the demand. This provides an energy-efficient use and smoother flow. Also, therefore, ensure the pump is only working as required by demand.

Can I Install a booster pump without a break tank?

In the UK, Water Authority bylaws do not allow pumps to connect directly to the water main supply pipe. The break tank prevents a pump from starving other properties on the same water main and also ensures the booster pump has an easier job, pumping from its own supply.  There is an exemption for pumps up to 12L/min, such as a shower pump, but 12L/min will not be enough flow to boost a property water supply.
